About the Artist
Matthew Hilton is an award winning British designer artist based in London.
He was previously Head of Furniture Design for Habitat and was made a Royal Designer for Industry in 2004, widely considered the highest honour for a designer. Hilton continues to design at Matthew Hilton Design Studio, his eponymous consultancy practice that he established in 2009 where he works for leading furniture companies and brands including SCP. Case, De la Espada, Driade, Disform, Sawaya and Moroni, Montis, Perobell, Montina, Andreu World and Authentics.
Hilton designed industry classics such as the Balzac chair, the Cross table, the Flipper and Antelope table. He has exhibited globally for his design work including a solo exhibition, Furniture for our Time, at the Geffrye Museum in London.
Tough Moment marks Hilton’s debut exhibition as a sculptural artist. To create each piece, he uses various forming processes such as laser-cutting, milling, water-jet cutting, folding and traditional casting. These processes are employed to manipulate the hard and weighty medium into bold abstract forms aiming to evoke our physical and emotional experiences. “I want my sculptures to embody strength, weight, and a balance between form, manufacture, and emotion,” he says. “I am working on abstracted forms with vague, almost memories of figurative, representational beginnings.”
